INTRODUCTION

Chitwan Medical College Teaching Hospital (CMCTH) was established on 20th June 2006. Chitwan Medical College Teaching Hospital (CMC-TH) a tertiary care hospital serves the catchment area of Narayani zone and Central Region of Nepal, an area with a rapidly growing population. Initiated and managed by renowned medical professionals and practitioners of the country, making this Institution one of such kind, CMCTH is providing a world-class medical education to future academics, medical practitioners and health-care professionals.

CMCTH provides professional qualifications over a range of specializations. CMCTH trains future health professionals to serve selflessly and humbly, while emphasizing strong medical ethics and appreciation of human worth and dignity.

The hallmark of CMCTH is the 'patient-centricity' which can be seen in the services it provides to people. CMCTH is also a forerunner towards social service and has been actively promoting a proactive approach to diseases by conducting regular health camps in remote areas of Chitwan and the adjoining districts.

In pursuit of maintaining excellent standards, CMCTH is continuously upgrading the clinical expertise, state-of-the-art equipments and latest diagnostic and imaging services.

The CMC hospital is Nepal’s first ISO certified Teaching Hospital. CMC Teaching Hospital serves approximately a quarter of a million people a year, from its district and outskirt areas involving the neighboring states of India also.

It has been about ten years since the inception of Chitwan Medical College Teaching Hospital. It was established with a vision that CMCTH would be an institute where any aspirant could make it the destination of choice for the study of any branch of health related science and could rely on CMCTH for the world class medical, dental and allied services.

It is affiliated with the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University , the pioneer institute in the field of production of human resources in health. CMC has received formal recognition from Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council, Nepal Health Professional Council and Nepal Pharmacy Council.

The motto of CMCTH is to fulfill the needs of people seeking quality education and services in health, at affordable price.

 

CMCTH has been established with 4 major objectives:

  1. To provide world-class medical education for undergraduate and postgraduate students of different medical and paramedical streams.
  2. To offer world-class diagnostic and treatment facilities.
  3. To run the medicine-research programs in order to enhance the academic/professional capabilities and competencies in parallel with the world’s contemporaries.
  4. To develop a trauma and tropical medicine research centre.

This academic and medical center is well equipped with lecture halls; seminar rooms; and departmental museums, libraries with internet, and laboratories which meet the norms set by the related health professional’s councils and University.

Quality has never been an incidental event; it is the result of continuous and sincere efforts. The sincere and continuous efforts of the Management Team, Faculty Members, Staffs and of course the Students and their Parents have made CMCTH on of the prime destinations for students.

CMCTH strives for prominence by differentiating itself through excellence, in the full spectrum of medical education at the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development levels.

The faculties here include highly experienced, conscientious and motivated faculties from both within and outside the country, who are dedicated to their profession. Presently, CMC is conducting 8 Bachelor Level Programs and 3 Masters Level Programs. The programs are: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Generic BSc Nursing (BSc Nursing), Post-Basic Bachelor of Nursing (BN), Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm), Bachelor in Public Health (BPH), Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging technology(BSc MIT), Bachelor in Medical Laboratory and Technology (BMLT), Master of Nursing (MN), Master in Public Health (MPH) and MSc Clinical Microbiology.

CMCTH is dedicated to leadership and excellence in advancing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury. The teaching hospital of the CMC, operating now with 750 beds with more that 70% occupancy all the time and providing all modern medical services with most advanced diagnostic facilities to patient’s satisfaction, is the reflection of our firm commitment to provide quality health services to people at affordable price. CMCTH has now completed 8 years of service.

Chitwan Medical College has directly employed 1000 people in its first few years of operation and planning to expand them to more than 1500 people from Chitwan and surrounding districts. It is dedicated to follow the rules and regulations provided by the ministry of health and ready to accept responsibilities provided by the MOH to uplift the basic parameters of health.

The management of CMC has incorporated a team of professional people from medical, managerial, financial and administrative experts based on its strategies to operate world class facilities like Teaching Hospital, Medical College and Research Center. The current BOD comprises seven members from amongst the investors and rest of the management is being carried out with the professionally qualified people in their field. All together approximately 200 doctors, 300 nursing staffs, 86 technologists, 125 administrative officials and 80 ancillary staff are employed in the hospital to run the overall facilities and also to provide the services to the people of Chitwan as well as diverse neighborhood of the districts within a span of about 100 KM radius.

CMCTH has much advanced medical services in almost all clinical areas namely, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Psychiatry, Dermato – Venerology, Dentistry and Emergency.

CMC Teaching Hospital now runs super-speciality units namely, Cardiology Unit with Catheterization Lab, Nephrology Unit with haemodialysis, Respiratory Disease Unit, Gastroenterology as well as Tropical and Infectious Disease Units. Likewise, in surgical sub specialties, the teaching hospital runs Neurosurgery, Urosurgery, Burn and Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

For the diagnostic services which play a vital role in the diagnosis of diseases and the treatment thereafter, the teaching hospital offers CT scan, MRI, OPG, X-Rays and other necessary laboratory facilities. The hospital provides 24 hour Emergency Services, 24 hour CT Scan Services, USG and X-Ray Services,  Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Services and OPD services from as early as 8 am onwards. The Emergency Department of CMCTH is one of the largest emergency departments of Nepal.

CMCTH has the latest 1.5 tesla MRI Machine; a 4 Dimensional (4D) Ultrasound Machine with Colour Doppler; an Intensive Care Unit equipped with ventilators; an Operation Theatre equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities such as laminar air flow system with HEPPA; a well equipped emergency ICU; 

Health Professional Education and Research Centre of Chitwan Medical College conducts teaching-learning activities for the faculties, encourages research work and helps in the publication of research and other health related articles. It also publishes the Journal of Chitwan Medical College, regularly.

 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES:

The aim of the academic programmes is to produce competent, skilfull, socially committed, knowledgeable, qualified, and caring health professionals who are able to accept social and professional responsibilities on the basis of health care needs of Nepal.

MBBS Programme:

The MBBS program of CMCTH is a 5 and a half years course which includes compulsory one year internship. The MBBS curriculum is a community oriented curriculum and has integrated teaching learning activities. It encourages self-directed, problem based and community based learning. The curriculum is divided into three phases. Problem-based learning during the first phase increases mastery of complex subjects and prepares students for the clinical sciences.

BDS Program:

BDS Programme consists of five and a half years of study including one year of compulsory rotating internship. The Programme has three major components: the first component deals with the basic medical sciences common to medical degree programmes. There will be Pre- Clinical Laboratory techniques during the first 2 years. This component will provide basic foundation for understanding the principle, concepts and applications of underlying patho physiological mechanism of illness and the pre clinical techniques of preventing and treating the disease. The second component deals with the oral biology. It will be transition of students from Preclinical to the Clinical. The third component is the clinical dentistry itself which deals with dental health problems from the patient’s side.

The college of Dental Sciences which runs the program has fully functioning Basic and Clinical Departments with experienced faculties.

BPH Program:

CMCTH is committed to bring out the best of its public health education through its teaching institution and community. BPH is a 4 years course, which proposes a professional public health specialist. A BPH Student bears the responsibility of providing leadership to the community and to the middle grassroots level health workers. BPH course aims to provide advanced knowledge and practical skills in primary health care to those who have qualified the certificate level programs in medicine, nursing, health sciences & also to other related professionals.

BSc. MLT:

It is a 4 years program that aims in preparing middle level medical laboratory technologist who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitude and competencies required for them to function as efficient care providers, teachers and middle level managers in the hospitals as well as the different health care provision settings.

BSc. MIT:

It is a four-year program that aims at preparing middle level Imaging Technologists who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitude and competencies required for them to function as efficient care providers, teachers, middle level managers and equipment handlers in the Department of Radiology in the hospitals.

Bachelor of Pharmacy:

Chitwan Medical College (CMC), School of Pharmacy is offering the Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) program, in response to shortage of graduate pharmacists in the national health care systems in the country with a mission to cater and supply steady stream of highly competent pharmacy graduates required for the country and to contribute knowledge in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.  The course duration is of 4 years.

 

BSc. Nursing:

It is a 4 year program that aims at preparing middle level graduate nurses who can function independently or as members of health teams in providing holistic nursing care to individuals and groups at various levels of prevention, function in leadership positions, in managing client care in hospital as well as community setting, teach in nursing program and other related programs and also participate in research activities for the development of nursing profession.

BNS:

It is a 3 year program that aims to prepare graduate nurses as faculty for teaching and preparation of middle level nursing human resources. Its overall aim is to prepare nurses who can use independent judgment in making nursing decisions, function in leadership positions in provision of health care at different levels of health care system. They can also conduct research activities in the field of nursing for the betterment of nursing education and services.

MN:

It is a 2 year program that aims to prepare top level nurses with advanced knowledge and skills within the context of primary health care in order to improve the health and well being of the individual/family/community. It also enables the nurses to take roles and responsibilities of top level managers in the areas of GO/NGOs/INGOs and conduct research activities which ultimately strengthen in provision of quality education, service and administration as well.

MPH:

MPH is a 2 years academic course with a mandatory 6 months research work and 3 months public health practicum that aims at preparing public health specialists with an ability to comprehend existing and emerging public health problems and to provide leadership in health related education, research and service.

MSc. Clinical Microbiology:

It is a 3 year academic program and the aim is to train students in the field of Clinical Microbiology. Theoretical as well as practical training is imparted to the candidates so that they can independently investigate and develop expertise in the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases in the community.

SOCIAL WELFARE SERVICES AT CMCTH

CMCTH is committed to carrying out social welfare services for the benefit of the population it caters to. As per the policy of CMC, poor/ultrapoor patients are provided upto 100% discount on medical services.

The Government of Nepal (DoHS) through its special program on chronic diseases - ‘BipannaNagarikSahayataKosh’ has been supporting the people with a number of enlisted chronic diseases for their treatment and care. Bipannanagarikausadhiupacharkosh was started in 2066/67 BS to increase access in health services by providing support to the bipanna (impoverished people) for the treatment of selected chronic diseases. The guideline for the program was developed in 2067 and was implemented from the same year under the name bipanna nagarik aushadhi upachar kosh nirdeshika. According to the guideline, support is available for eight different types of diseases namely: Heart disease, Kidney disease, Cancer, Spinal injury, Head injury, Parkinson, Alzheimer’s disease and Sickle Cell Anemia. CMCTH has been providing free medical services and treatment of upto 1 lakh rupees for patients who come with the above mentioned diseases at CMCTH.

As directed by the Ministry of Health, kidney dialysis is offered free of cost at CMCTH.

Under the Safe Motherhood Programme of Government of Nepal, CMCTH has been implementing the “AamaSurkashyaProgramme” and offeres free vaginal and caesarian section deliveries.

As per the policy of Government of Nepal, CMC offers free vaginal hysterectomy services.

As per the policy of CMC, attractive discounts are offered at CMCTH for senior citizens and for physically challenged patients.

Under the Health Insurance Programme of Government of Nepal, treatment and medication is provided for free for those insured under the Health Insurance Programme.

All vaccinations under the National Programme on Immunization (NPI) schedule is provided for free at CMCTH.  Similarly, all family planning services are provided for free at CMCTH as per the policy of Government of Nepal.

Under the DOTS Programme of Government of Nepal, medications for Tuberculosis are provided free of cost.

Residents of ManavSewa Ashram, a community organization in Chitwan, are provided free treatment and medications at CMCTH.

 

 

HEALTH CAMPS & DENTAL CAMPS CONDUCTED BY CMCTH

CMCTH conducts regular health camps & dental camps at remote areas of Nepal. Doctors from all specialities provide health services along with health education and health awareness activities. At least 10 health camps are held evry year by CMCTH. Free check up and medications are provided along with free USG, free ECG and free general laboratory investigations.

SATELLITE CLINICS OF CMCTH

CMCTH conducts satellite clinics at various centres. Students are posted to the satellite clinics as part of their community postings. During Internship also, students are sent to these clinics where they examine patients under supervision.
