MBBS program in Chitwan medical college was started from 2066 Mangsir with 80 students in 1st batch. The MBBS curriculum is a community oriented curriculum and has integrated teaching learning activities. It encourages self-directed, problem based and community based learning. The curriculum is divided into three phases. First phase includes 1st and 2nd year.
In 1st year, students will learn basic medical sciences and community medicine. Basic medical sciences include anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and biochemistry. These six subjects are integrated together and divided into various systems and hence called integrated basic medical sciences (IBMS).
Systems of IBMS included in 1st year are general concept, musculoskeletal system and neurosensory system. Community medicine includes epidemiology, biostatistics, demography, environmental health, nutrition, health education, sociology, family health, communication skills, information technology, and community health lab and community health diagnosis.
In 2nd year students will learn remaining systems of IBMS which includes respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine and reproductive system.
Forensic medicine, applied epidemiology, family health exercise and major clinical subjects like medicine surgery and pediatrics are included in 2nd phase which is of one year duration. Students will also be posted in four major departments (medicine, surgery, gynae/obs and pediatrics) during this phase to develop clinical skills.
Third phase is of one and half year duration and is mainly clinical. Students will learn medicine, surgery, gynae/obs, pediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, orthopedics, dentistry, psychiatry, dermatology, radiology, anesthesia and emergency medicine. Information technology, ethics and research are also included in this phase and students will also learn district health service management under community medicine course.
Finally there will be one year internship course in which students are posted in various departments (medicine, surgery, gynae/obs, pediatrics, orthopedics, anesthesia, accident and emergency medicine, ophthalmology and ENT) to gain clinical skills.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program in Chitwan Medical College was initiated with its first batch of 80 students in 2066 Mangsir. CMCTH envisions the making of empathetic, sincere, diligent and professionally qualified medical doctors who will contribute with excellence in patient care and disease prevention.
The MBBS program offered at CMCTH is designed to produce physicians who are knowledgeable of the principles of modern medical science and who have mastered the art of critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process in order to engage in the practice of medicine as competent professionals.
The curriculum has been developed to provide learning opportunities enabling medical students to acquire fundamental knowledge develop basic skills and appreciate principles relevant to health care in the context of the community.
GOALS OF THE MBBS PROGRAMME:
The curriculum has been designed to achieve the following goals:
1) To provide a comprehensive medical education leading to MBBS degree;
2) To prepare for evidence based medical practice in the changing health care environment of the 21st Century;
3) To follow outcome based approach to medical courses and prepare the student to achieve the competencies in Medical knowledge, Clinical skills, Evidence-based learning, Patient care, Effective communication skills & Professionalism;
4) To develop a compassionate, analytical and ethical approach in the delivery of health care to the community;
5) To prepare physicians to function effectively in the social health care system.
COMPETENCIES TO BE ACHIEVED BY MBBS GRADUATES:
ADMISSION INTO MBBS (2018):
Chitwan Medical College invites applications for admission into 1st year MBBS course in 10th batch for the session of 2018 (2075 BS). Admission shall be on merit basis and shall follow the same criteria as prescribed by Tribhuvan University, IOM (Institute of Medicine).
BASIC QUALIFICATION AND PRE-REQUISITE FOR ENTRANCE IN MBBS COURSE:
Procedure for Candidate Selection
Eligible candidates should appear for the entrance exam conducted by IOM, Exam section and the merit list will be published based on the marks secured in the entrance examination. The candidate selection and admission will then be done following the guidelines set by IOM. [Please check notices on website of IOM (www.iom.edu.np) for regular updates]
ENTRANCE EXAM DATE/RESULT PUBLICATION AND ADMISSION DATES: (TIME OF THE YEAR):
Entrance Exam will be held tentatively in Bhadra every year. Admission starts from Asoj/Kartik every year.
Number of scholarship seats will be selected as per government rules. In this regard, candidates must apply for scholarship quota with valid documents to Ministry of Education.
Tuition and other fees are payable as per the rules of CMC.
ADMISSION PROCEDURE AT CMC COLLEGE:
After fulfilling the aforementioned criteria, students have to visit CMC College along with the guardians and have to present the original copies of all the academic certificates. Thereafter, students have to fill up necessary documents and agreement papers as per the rules and requirements of CMC.
Successful candidates will have to undergo medical test by a Medical Board constituted by the College and must be declared fit for final admission. The list of the test and investigations is provided in the annexure.

ORIENTATION FOR MBBS
There will be a 7-day orientation for the students at the beginning of the 1st year.
There will be one day of orientation at the beginning of MBBS 2nd Year, 3rd Year, 4rth Year, 5th Year and at the beginning of Internship.
The class timings are from 09:00 to 16:00 hours, and depending upon the circumstances, the classes can start from 08:00 hour in selected months.
ATTENDANCE AND ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR APPEARANCE IN THE FINAL EXAMS
At least 80% attendance (in theory and practical) is mandatory for appearing in the final examinations and will be strictly implemented. In addition to this, the students have to secure at least 50% marks in the respective internal assessments for being eligible to appear for the final board exams.
The Internship will commence after the students pass the final board examination and acquire the provisional registration number from Nepal Medical Council.
During Internship, students will undergo 2 months each of clinical posting in Medicine, Surgery & Gynae/Obs; One month each of clinical posting in Emergency Medicine, Orthopaedics & Paediatrics; and 15 days each of clinical posting in Anaesthesia, ENT, Family Planning, Ophthalmology, Dermatology & Psychiatry.
Internship Log Book is to be maintained for each clinical posting and has to be duly signed by the respective faculties and Heads of the Departments. Subsequent to this, the Interns will be provided an Internship Completion Certificate issued by CMC.
After completion of a minimum of 6 months of Internship, the students are eligible to appear for NMC License Examination. Subsequent to passing NMC License Examination and completion of Internship, the Interns are eligible for Temporary Registration Number from Nepal Medical Council.
VACATION AND LEAVE FACILITY FOR THE STUDENTS
A total of 33 days are allocated as vacation in one academic year. Sick leaves are sanctioned after the review of circumstances of the student.
There’s a specified dress code for the students which should be worn at their time in the college and hospital. CMC believes appropriate dressing is important for creation of positive learning environment.
The IT department of CMC provides different services fulfilling the need of the students in this era of information and technology. It serves for academic efficiency, access to internet and provides solutions to the technological issues that arise.
There are more than 100 computers and other technological assets (such as multimedia projector, audio aid etc.) in labs and different departments of the college and is being ably managed by the IT department. The entire area of college and hospital is a high speed internet wifi zone, the access of which is provided after entry into the institutional system (Restriction to access applies to certain areas in the hospital and college)
Institutional email address (Domain name: cmc.edu.np) is provided to all the students.
Procedure for Getting Internet Access
After admission of the students for this session, the verified student list will be sent to the IT Department. The students are requested to provide the MAC address of their device (1 device/student) for internet connectivity, after which, the student receives the username and password for the internet access.
The department also provides solutions to the technological issues that come up during academic activities and also helps the students in case they have any IT related issues.
There is also a provision of e-library; the central library at the college and hospital library can be accessed remotely through online connection.
CMC provides well-furnished accommodation to the students.
Procedure for acquiring accomodation at CMC hostel:
The students have to fill up an Application Form which will subsequently be approved by CMC administration.
An amount of 3000 Rs/month is charged as accommodation fee and an amount of 6000 Rs per month is charged as fee for canteen services. There will be a 10% increase in these charges every year.
There are separate hostels for boys and girls. The availability has to be checked during the time of admission. The room has to be shared by 2 persons of the same sex. In the condition that a student wants to hire a single room, he/she has to pay 6000 rupees per month for the room.
There is also an excellent facility for indoor/outdoor games near the hostel within the college premises, which the students can use for physical and mental fitness.
There is a hostel management committee that looks after the hostel issues. The students are requested to read the rules and regulations carefully.
Library is a service oriented organization, which aims to serve the users without taking any profit. In context of CMC, the library is a special library i.e. Medical library because the most of the collections of this library are related to the medical science.
A library is an organized collection of sources of information and similar resource, made accessible to a defined community for reference of borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material, and may be a physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both.
A library’s collection can include books, periodicals, newspapers, films, maps, prints, documents, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, Blue-ray Discs, e-books, audio books, and other formats.
CMC has a very well-organized library facility that is being run by CMC. The library committee and library staffs are devoted to proper functioning and management of the library present at 2 different locations- one at the college and second at the hospital.
The medical library comprises of course books (both text/reference books), journals, e-books, CD-ROMs related to medicine and newspapers etc. which are properly catalogued based on Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system.
The library has dedicated study space for the students/readers (accommodating capacity of both libraries is 600) that provides excellent studying environment. The seating is comfortable and ventilation, lighting and provision of drinking water and toilet facilities are well taken care of.
The library also offers internet facilities and photocopy services to its readers. It also has HINARI facility, so the students can download the desired HINARI-listed journals for recent medical knowledge and research purpose.
Book Classification System:
For proper arrangement of the books and other documents they are classified according to “Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)” system.
Cataloguing and Databases:
The catalogues (databases) are prepared on a separate Library software, which tries to meet different approaches of the users by making possible search via. Subject, author, title, series and publishers also.
The E-learning system is being established in the near future.
The college library is open from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and the hospital library is open from 7 am to 10 pm.
Process of obtaining library membership
All the faculties, students and staffs of this institute are eligible to become library member. The faculty staff and administrative staff should be recommended and approved by principal. All the CMC students should be recommended by senior administrative officer and should be approved by principal. After approval, the students are enrolled into the library system and their library cards are issued (upon receiving two photographs) after which they can use the privilege of borrowing of books.
Decorum/ Rules & Regulations of the Library:
There is decorum to be followed in the library, the details of which are available from the library administration.
Privileges and Condition of Loan:
Each student is given 5 textbooks at a time for 10 days. A fine of Rupees Two per day is charged if students fail to return the books upto 7 days after the due date. A fine of Rupees 5 per day is charged if students fail to return the books exceeding those 7 days.
In addition, 2 reference books are also issued at a time to the students and are to be returned on the same day. If reference books are not returned on the same day, then a fine of Rs 10 per day is charged.
Library card is not transferable.
All the students of CMC are entitled to a discount of 75% in all medical and surgical treatment and medications. The beneficiaries of the students (father and mother only) are provided 50% discount in the aforementioned services.
Procedure for obtaining medical benefit
The eligible student needs to fill a medical beneficiary form and verify the same with the college administration. The student can avail of the medical benefit following enrollment of the student into the system.
FIRST AID FACILITIES IN THE COLLEGE
A separate room is allocated for the provision of first aid treatment of the students and others that contain necessary equipment and medications. A team of dedicated faculties (doctors and nursing faculty) deliver first aid management and take care of the transport of the patient to the hospital. Periodic first aid trainings are being planned in the near future for selected students and staffs to develop a pool of first-aid providers.
