It is a four year program that aims in preparing middle level medical laboratory technologist who are equipped with the knowledge , skills and attitude competencies required for them to function as efficient care provider, teacher and middle level manager in the hospitals as well as in the different health care settings.

Objectives of the Bachelor of science in Medical Laboratory Technology Degree

Medical laboratory scientists are specialized health professionals who provide vital information about a patient's state of health. Their input is vital in the diagnosis of disease and in monitoring its treatment. Chitwan Medical College Teaching Hospital will use an integrated approach in teaching and learning since medical laboratory technologist need to acquire a broad range of scientific education. The Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology degree correlates scientific finding with strong foundation of core science courses. The students could expand their knowledge in Physiology, Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Bacteriology, Parasitology, Virology, Serology, Mycology, Hematology, Histopathology, Cytopathology and Blood Banking.

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology Degree offered by the Chitwan Medical College Teaching Hospital aims to:

1) Produce professional graduate in laboratory medicine who are academically sound, technically skilled, creative in nature and self-reliant in performing quality control, interpreting the results and provide leadership to subordinates.
2) Produce graduates of good quality, well-rounded, skillful, resourceful, inquisitive and competitive both locally and globally.
3) Produce graduates who are ethical, professional, nationalistic and patriotic and have leadership potentials in the pharmacy profession and in the community.
4) Produce graduates who are caring, have an interest in serving mankind, loving, united and sensitive towards the variety in the socio-culture of our country. 

In order to provide quality services in the above mentioned areas, the graduates will be able to:

a) Demonstrate professional competence to work as member of the multi professional health care team. 
b) Demonstrate broad understanding of the scientific basis of the specialty of medical laboratory technology. 
c) Perform routine and special laboratory investigations on clinical and non clinical subjects independently. 
d) Interpret the results and explain underlined principle of each investigation. 
e) Assist and take part in research work. 
f) Participate in teaching learning activities. 
g) Set up Zonal level medical laboratory. 
h) Introduce quality control system in laboratory to have qualitative result. 
i) Perform managerial works - supervision of subordinates, or preparation of periodic reports and maintenance of inventory. 
j) Demonstrate competence in searching, handling and integrating information and applying knowledge, skills and attitudes in professional problem-solving. 
k) Perform sophisticated laboratory tests that help diagnose and treat disease 
l) Use complex instruments and electronic equipment 
m) Ensure test results are accurate 
n) Work independently but as an essential part of the health care team .

Selection criteria:

Candidates who have passed 10+2 Biology or Certificate Level in Medical Laboratory Technology with at least 50% on aggregate from the recognized educational institute by Tribhuvan University are eligible to appear in the common entrance examination conducted by Institute of Medicine, Maharajgunj ,Kathmandu, Nepal. Only the candidates on passed list are eligible for the admission.

Evaluation:

  • Out of total marks in theory, 20% marks will go for the internal assessment.
  • Pass marks 50%.

Attendance requirement:

  • 80% Attendance in theory and 90% in practical is required to sit for the final examination.

Grading system:

  • Distinction: 80% and above in aggregate
  • First division: 65% and above in aggregate
  • Second division [pass]: 50% and above in aggregate

A Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) is a healthcare professional who performs chemical, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological diagnostic analyses on body fluids. The technologist also performs equipment validations, calibrations, quality controls or run-by-run assessment, statistical control of observed data, and recording normal operations.

Medical Laboratory Technology is one of the largest and most important professions that provide allied health care. B.Sc. MLT at CMCTH is a four-year academic program that aims in preparing middle level medical laboratory technologist who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitude competencies required for them to function as efficient care provider, teacher and middle level manager in the hospitals as well as in the different health care settings. These technologists are skilled scientists who perform tests that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. As vital members of the health care team, medical laboratory professionals play a critical role in collecting the information needed to give the best care to an ill or injured patient.

Medical laboratory professionals have unlimited choices of practice settings. Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, public health facilities, and commercial laboratories all have positions open right now for qualified laboratory professionals. In these settings, communication and research skills are highly valued. Employment of clinical laboratory workers is expected to grow as the volume of laboratory tests increases with population growth and the development of new types of tests.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR B.Sc. MLT PROGRAMME:

  1. Candidate should have completed 10+2 or intermediate of science or equivalent course with English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry as major subjects securing at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate from a recognized college.
  2. Candidate (both Nepalese and foreign nationals) must have passed the entrance exam set by Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the same year candidate is seeking admission in.

      Procedure for Candidate Selection

Eligible candidates should appear for the entrance exam conducted by IOM, Exam section and the merit list will be published based on the marks secured in the entrance examination.   1. International students should have an eligibility certificate from the concerned authority of their country, a valid student visa (if visa is required to stay in Nepal) and eligibility certificate issued by IoM or Ministry of Education of Nepal.
